Insights from a Suburban Pioneer, Pt. 3: Workspace Where You Live

In last week’s episode of Everything Coworking, host Jamie Russo interviewed Mara Hauser (25N CEO + Founder) on the ins and outs of an emerging market and subject close to our hearts: suburban coworking. Read on for Mara’s perspective on the challenges (and unique opportunities) that coworking outside of the big-city limits can present—from corporate coworking and growing small-town economies to advice on opening a suburban workspace for yourself.

Workspaces in Residential Buildings Create Synergy
by Proximity

J: So, Mara, you and I have talked a lot before this, and your space in Arlington Heights, being retail-level in a luxury high-rise building, is an emerging model we’re seeing happening—and you said you’re seeing some value and some synergy in that proximity. Residents and potential residents are really interested in the fact that there’s a workspace in the building.

M: Absolutely. And, plus, we as a coworking space get the benefit of the building amenities in addition to ours. So, for example, we have a Premier Membership and our members can use the health club, they have a golf simulator, bike repair shop, underground parking… They also have a music recording studio in the building, and they have an amazing roof deck, too.

J: Really? Brilliant.

We get the benefit of the building amenities in addition to ours.

M: So we have access for our members to use those amenities themselves, as well as renting the roof deck for a party.

J: That’s just such a win-win. And I know you have a great relationship with the developer and tons of synergies there—it’s a model we’ll start to see more and more.
